🌱 Spider Plant

The Spider Plant, also known as Airplane Plant or Ribbon Plant, is a popular semi-succulent houseplant native to tropical. While not a true succulent, it shares some succulent traits like water storage in its thick, fleshy roots and tolerance for occasional drought.

🌿 Appearance

  • Leaves: Long, narrow, and arching, resembling grass blades. Usually green with white or yellow stripes running down the center or edges.
  • Growth habit: Forms a dense clump of leaves that arch outward, creating a cascading look.
  • Pups (baby plants): Small offshoots or “spiderettes” grow on long stems, resembling spiders hanging from a web — hence the name!
  • Flowers: Small white, star-shaped blooms appear on long stems before producing new baby plants.

🌤️ Care Requirements

Condition

Ideal Care

Light

Bright, indirect sunlight. Tolerates low light but grows best in filtered light. Avoid direct hot sun which can scorch leaves.

Water

Water moderately. Allow the top 1 inch of soil to dry between waterings. Don’t let the roots sit in water.

Soil

Well-draining soil, similar to succulent or cactus mix with some organic matter.

Temperature

Thrives between 18–30°C (65–85°F). Keep away from frost.

Humidity

Prefers moderate humidity but adapts well to normal household air.

Fertilizer

Use a balanced liquid fertilizer once every 2–3 weeks during growing season (spring–summer).

🌼 Propagation

Spider Plants are extremely easy to propagate:

  1. Wait until the spiderettes (baby plants) develop small roots.
  2. Cut and place them in water or soil.
  3. New plants root quickly and can be potted separately.

💧 Common Problems

  • Brown leaf tips: Usually from fluoride in tap water or low humidity — use filtered water.
  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Slow growth: May need repotting or more light.
