Sempervivum tectorum, commonly known as “Houseleek” or “Hens and Chicks,” is a hardy, rosette-forming succulent plant

🌿 General Description
•    Appearance:
Sempervivum tectorum forms tight rosettes of fleshy leaves that are usually green, reddish, or purple depending on sun exposure and season.
•    Offsets (Chicks):
The mother rosette (the “hen”) produces small offshoots (the “chicks”) around its base. These chicks eventually root and form new plants, creating a lovely cluster.
•    Size:
Individual rosettes are typically 5–15 cm wide.
______________
🌸 Flowers
•    The plant produces tall flower stalks (up to 20–30 cm) in summer.
•    Flowers are star-shaped, in shades of pink, red, or purple.
•    Each rosette dies after flowering, but its chicks continue to grow and multiply, ensuring the plant’s survival.
______________
🌞 Light Requirements
•    Prefers full sun to partial shade.
•    The more sunlight it receives, the more vibrant and colorful the leaves become.
______________
🌱 Soil
•    Needs well-draining soil, such as cactus or sandy mix.
•    Avoid waterlogged soil — Sempervivum is highly sensitive to rot.
______________
💧 Watering
•    Water sparingly — allow the soil to dry completely before watering again.
•    Very drought-tolerant once established.
•    In winter, reduce watering drastically.
______________
🌡️ Temperature
•    Very cold-hardy — can survive frost and snow (down to -30°C).
•    Ideal for outdoor rock gardens, pots, or rooftop gardens.
______________
🌸 Propagation
•    Easily propagated by separating the offsets (chicks) from the mother rosette and replanting them in well-draining soil.
______________
🪴 Care Tips
•    Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent fungal issues.
•    Remove dead leaves or rosettes to keep the cluster healthy.
•    Fertilization is usually not necessary, but you can use a diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring–summer).
