Sempervivum pumilum is a small, hardy, and attractive rosette-forming succulent that belongs to the Crassulaceae family. It is one of the many species of Sempervivum, commonly known as “Hens and Chicks.”
🌿 Description
· Appearance:
Sempervivum pumilum forms compact, low-growing rosettes about 2–3 cm (1 inch) across. The rosettes have fleshy, pointed leaves that are green to reddish-purple, often deepening in color under sunlight or cold stress.
· Texture:
The leaves are covered with fine, cobweb-like hairs (in some forms) or can be smooth, giving them a delicate and soft look.
· Offsets:
The plant produces numerous small offsets (chicks) around the main rosette (hen), forming dense mats over time.
· Flowers:
During summer, mature rosettes send up tall flowering stalks with star-shaped pink to reddish flowers. After flowering, the mother rosette dies, but the surrounding offsets continue to grow.
🌞 Light Requirements
· Prefers full sun to partial sunlight.
· In bright light, colors intensify—greens become richer, and reds or purples more pronounced.
· Indoors, place near a south- or east-facing window.
🌡️ Temperature
· Very cold-hardy (can survive freezing temperatures down to –20°C / –4°F).
· Ideal for outdoor rock gardens or alpine beds.
· Prefers cool to moderate temperatures; avoid prolonged indoor heat.
💧 Watering
· Use the “soak and dry” method — water thoroughly when soil is dry, then allow excess to drain.
· In winter, reduce watering significantly as the plant goes semi-dormant.
· Avoid letting water sit in the rosette center (can cause rot).
🌱 Soil
· Needs well-draining, gritty soil.
· A cactus/succulent mix or a combination of regular soil + sand/pumice/perlite works well.
· Avoid heavy, clay-rich soils.
