Scientific name: Sedum lineare
Common names: Needle Stonecrop, Carpet Sedum, Line-leaved Stonecrop
Family: Crassulaceae

🌿 Description

Sedum lineare is a low-growing, mat-forming succulent. It’s often used as a groundcover or in rock gardens, and it’s popular for succulent arrangements and living roofs.

  • Growth habit: Spreads horizontally and forms a dense carpet of small, needle-like leaves.
  • Leaves: Slender, cylindrical, light green to yellow-green, sometimes with a soft golden tint.
  • Flowers: Small, star-shaped yellow flowers appear in late spring to summer.
  • Height: Typically grows 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) tall.
  • Spread: Can spread 30–60 cm (1–2 feet) wide under good conditions.

🌞 Light Requirements

  • Full sun to partial shade.
  • Prefers bright light for compact growth and vibrant color.
  • In very hot climates, a little afternoon shade prevents leaf scorching.

💧 Watering

  • Like most succulents, it prefers the “soak and dry” method:
    • Water deeply, then allow soil to dry completely before watering again.
  • Overwatering can cause root rot.
  • In winter, reduce watering drastically (it goes semi-dormant).

🪴 Soil

  • Requires well-draining soil — sandy or gritty mix is ideal.
  • A cactus/succulent potting mix or regular soil amended with perlite or pumice works well.

🌡️ Temperature & Hardiness

  • Hardy in USDA zones 6–9.
  • Tolerates both heat and mild frost.
  • Protect from prolonged freezing temperatures.
  • Ideal temperature range: 10–30°C (50–85°F).

🌼 Propagation

Extremely easy to propagate:

  • Stem cuttings: Simply snip a small piece, let it callous over for a day or two, and replant in dry soil.
  • Division: Clumps can be gently divided and replanted.
  • Leaf cuttings also root easily.

It roots quickly and spreads fast, making it great for ground cover or container filler.
