Sedum nussbaumerianum (also called Coppertone Stonecrop or Golden Sedum) is a low-growing, trailing succulent. It’s part of the Crassulaceae family and is prized for its vibrant colors and easy care.

✳️ General Features

  • Growth habit: Sprawling and trailing; stems can reach 20–30 cm long.
  • Leaves: Thick, fleshy, almond-shaped, and arranged in rosettes along the stems.
  • Color: Starts green and turns golden-yellow to copper-orange when exposed to full sun.
  • Flowers: Small, star-shaped, white flowers appear in late winter to early spring.
  • Sun exposure: Prefers bright light or full sun for best coloration.
  • Watering: Typical “soak and dry” succulent care — water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again.

🌵 Two Common Types or Forms

Although Sedum nussbaumerianum is one species, you’ll often find two distinct forms or cultivars in gardens and nurseries:

1. Standard Sedum nussbaumerianum (Coppertone Stonecrop)

  • Color: Greenish-gold in shade; bright copper-orange in full sun.
  • Form: Grows in dense trailing mats; great for hanging baskets or ground cover.
  • Leaves: Plump and slightly longer (about 2–3 cm).
  • Use: Ideal for adding warm tones to succulent arrangements.

2. Sedum nussbaumerianum ‘Lemon Ball’ or ‘Golden Sedum’

  • A select cultivar with brighter, more lime-yellow leaves.
  • Compact growth and slightly shorter leaves.
  • Keeps its yellow hue even with less sunlight.
  • More cold-tolerant than the standard form.
  • Commonly used in rock gardens and sunny borders.
