Purple Sempervivum tectorum — also known as Hens and Chicks (Purple variety) — is a hardy, rosette-forming succulent known for its stunning purple tones, symmetrical shape, and ability to thrive in tough conditions. It’s one of the most resilient and easy-to-grow succulents, making it perfect for both beginners and collectors.
🌿 Overview
· Scientific Name: Sempervivum tectorum
· Common Names: Houseleek, Hens and Chicks, Purple Sempervivum
· Origin: Mountainous regions of southern Europe
🌸 Appearance
· Forms tight rosettes of pointed, fleshy leaves that range from greenish-purple to deep burgundy, depending on sunlight and temperature.
· Produces small offsets ("chicks") around the mother rosette ("hen"), forming dense clusters.
· In summer, mature rosettes may bloom with pinkish or reddish star-shaped flowers before dying — but the offsets continue the plant’s life cycle.
🌞 Light Requirements
· Prefers full sun to develop its best purple color.
· In partial shade, leaves stay more green.
· Indoors, place near a bright south or west-facing window.
💧 Watering
· Follow the “soak and dry” method — water deeply only when the soil is completely dry.
· Avoid overwatering; it is drought-tolerant but sensitive to standing water.
· In winter, reduce watering significantly.
🌱 Soil
· Needs well-draining soil, such as a cactus/succulent mix.
· You can improve drainage with perlite, pumice, or coarse sand.
· Avoid heavy clay soils that retain moisture.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
· Cold hardy: tolerates frost and snow (down to –20°C).
· Prefers cool to moderate temperatures.
· Low humidity is ideal — too much moisture can cause rot.
🌼 Fertilizer
· Rarely needs feeding.
· If desired, use a diluted succulent fertilizer once during spring for growth support.
