he plant is a form (variety) of Orbea semota (sometimes still listed under its synonym Stapelia semota). The “var. lutea” part refers specifically to the yellow-flowering variant: the word lutea means “saffron yellow” or “yellowish”.
•    Stems: Succulent, greenish to yellowish-green, strongly toothed (i.e., you’ll see prominent conical “teeth” along the stem margins). Can root where they touch soil.
•    Flowers: For var. lutea, brilliant yellow star-shaped blooms, about 3.5-5 cm across (≈1.4-2 inches) for many sources.
•    Flowers often have a about the “carrion flower” style trait: in the broader Orbea semota group the flowers are foul smelling (to attract flies). For var. lutea this may be less documented, but some growers note the odor

🪴 Cultivation & care
If you’re planning to grow it (especially in India, Uttarakhand region like you), here are key care tips:
•    Light: Bright light is good. Some sources say light shade or filtered sun may be better, especially for yellow-flowering forms (they may scorch or fade in full hot sun)
•    Soil / Potting mix: Very free-draining mix is essential. Since the roots are shallow, use a cactus/succulent mix with extra pumice/perlite, or grit. Clay pots help the soil dry out between waterings
•    Watering: During the active growing season (warmer months) moderate watering; when dormant or in cooler temps reduce watering significantly. Avoid keeping it wet in cold conditions.
•    Temperature & humidity: It is not frost-hard. According to sources for the species group, hardiness is roughly USDA zone 11a–11b (≈4.4–10 °C min) which means in a place like Uttarakhand you’ll need to protect it from cold nights/winter.
•    Flowering: Needs mature stems and good conditions. Some growers note that warming and good light help trigger blooms. Also note that the flower may emit a smell (which is normal).
•    Propagation: Usually by stem cuttings – allow cut end to dry a little, then root in a free-draining mix. Also seed propagation is possible but slower.
•    Risks / pests: Susceptible to rot if kept too wet; watch for mealybugs / scale on stems; ensure good airflow.
______________
•    Indoors or in a sheltered spot during cooler months is advisable. Ensure very good drainage and minimal watering in those months.
•    During summer/warm months you might be able to place it outdoors with filtered bright sun, but protect from direct harsh midday sun and from heavy monsoon rains (if the plant is outdoors).
