Lithops 1 succulents — often known as “Living Stones” or “Pebble Plants” — are fascinating succulents native to southern Africa. Their stone-like appearance helps them blend into their surroundings, protecting them from being eaten by animals.

🌿 Description

·         Scientific name: Lithops spp.

·         Common name: Living Stones, Pebble Plants

·         Family: Aizoaceae

·         Lithops have two thick, fused leaves that form a cleft in the middle, from which a new pair of leaves or flowers emerge.

·         They stay very small (about 1–2 inches across) and come in many colors and patterns, mimicking pebbles or gravel.

🌞 Light Requirements

·         Needs: Bright sunlight for at least 4–6 hours daily.

·         Best placed in a south- or east-facing window.

·         Too little light = plants elongate and lose their color.

·         Too much harsh sunlight = may cause sunburn, especially in very hot climates.

💧 Watering

Lithops have a unique watering cycle:

·         Spring to early summer: Water sparingly only when soil is completely dry.

·         Mid-summer dormancy: Stop watering completely — the plant rests.

·         Autumn (flowering time): Resume light watering.

·         Winter: Do not water — the old leaves dry up as new ones grow inside.

Overwatering is the #1 cause of death in Lithops.

🌱 Soil

·         Use a gritty, fast-draining mix, similar to cactus soil.

·         Ideal mix: 50% perlite/pumice + 50% succulent mix.

·         Avoid organic-rich soils — Lithops rot easily in moisture-retaining soil.

🪴 Pot

·         Choose a shallow pot with excellent drainage holes.

·         Terracotta pots are best since they allow excess moisture to evaporate.

🌼 Flowers

·         Lithops bloom in autumn, producing daisy-like flowers (white or yellow) from the leaf’s center.

·         The blooms open in the afternoon and close in the evening.

🌡️ Temperature

·         Ideal range: 18–28°C

·         Can tolerate brief cold down to 5°C but must stay dry in cold weather.
