Sempervivum ‘Silver King’ is a hardy, eye-catching succulent belonging to the Sempervivum (Hens and Chicks) family. It is well-loved for its silvery-green tones and resilience, making it ideal for rock gardens, containers, or outdoor beds.
🌿 Description
· Appearance: Forms compact rosettes of thick, pointed leaves that have a silvery-green to gray-green color, often covered with fine hairs that give a frosted look.
· Rosette Size: Each rosette grows about 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) across.
· Offsets (Chicks): Produces many small offshoots around the main rosette — hence the name “Hens and Chicks.”
· Flowers: Blooms once in its lifetime with star-shaped pinkish or reddish flowers on a tall stalk. After flowering, the main rosette (the “hen”) dies, but the “chicks” continue to grow and fill in the space.
🌞 Light Requirements
· Prefers full sun to maintain its compact shape and vibrant silvery color.
· Can tolerate partial shade, but too little light can make the rosettes stretch and lose their color intensity.
🌡️ Temperature & Hardiness
· Exceptionally cold-hardy – can survive freezing and snow (down to around -30°C / -22°F).
· Thrives in temperate to cool climates and can tolerate heat if kept dry.
💧 Watering
· Drought-tolerant: Water sparingly. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
· In summer, water once every 1–2 weeks; in winter, minimal to no watering is needed.
· Avoid overwatering – it’s the most common cause of rot.
🌱 Soil
· Use a well-draining succulent mix or a blend of:
o 50% cactus/succulent soil
o 50% coarse sand, pumice, or perlite
· Avoid clay or compact soil — they retain moisture.
