Aeonium ‘Black Rose’ is a striking succulent known for its large, dark burgundy-to-nearly-black rosettes that resemble a black rose. It is commonly associated with Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’ and develops a woody stem as it matures.

Unlike many desert succulents, Aeoniums are winter growers. They tend to grow actively during cooler, brighter months and may slow down or go semi-dormant during hot summer weather.

🌱 Care Tips

  • ☀️ Light: Give it bright light and several hours of gentle direct sun. Strong light helps develop the deep dark coloration. Acclimate gradually to intense sunlight.
  • 💧 Water: During active growth, water thoroughly and then allow the soil to dry well before watering again. In very hot summer conditions, reduce watering rather than keeping the soil constantly wet.
  • 🪴 Soil: Use a fast-draining succulent mix with plenty of pumice or perlite.
  • 🌡️ Temperature: It prefers mild, cooler conditions, roughly 10–25°C. Protect it from frost and prolonged extreme heat.
  • 💨 Airflow: Excellent airflow is especially helpful in humid weather.
  • 🌿 Fertilizer: During active growth, use a diluted succulent fertilizer about once every 4–6 weeks. Avoid heavy feeding during summer dormancy.
  • ✂️ Pruning: Remove old or damaged leaves and trim leggy stems to maintain the shape. Cut stems can also be used for propagation.
  • 🌱 Propagation: Usually easy from stem cuttings. Allow the cut end to callus before planting.
  • 🪴 Pot: Use a container with a drainage hole. Terracotta is a good option.

🖤 Keeping the rosettes dark

Strong, appropriate light is the key to the characteristic dark color. If it receives too little light, the rosettes may become greener and more open, and the stems may stretch.
