Cheiridopsis candidissima (often called Cheiridopsis candidissimum) is a beautiful and compact belonging to the Aizoaceae family. It’s a low-growing, clumping plant prized for its silvery-blue leaves and bright daisy-like flowers.

🌿 Description

  • Leaves:
The plant forms small pairs of thick, fleshy, smooth leaves covered with a fine silvery or whitish coating, giving it a soft, powdery look.
The leaves are rounded or slightly keeled and often appear in pairs that close tightly during dry seasons to protect the inner growth.
  • Color:
The leaves are a pale blue-green to silver-gray, which helps reflect sunlight and reduce water loss.
  • Flowers:
In late winter or early spring, it produces bright yellow daisy-like blooms that open in full sun. The contrast between the yellow flowers and silvery foliage is very striking.
  • Growth habit:
It grows in small clusters, each pair of leaves representing a new growth cycle. It stays compact, usually reaching 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) in height.

🌞 Light Requirements

  • Prefers full sun to bright light.
  • In extremely hot areas, light shade during peak afternoon hours helps prevent leaf scorch.

💧 Watering

  • Water sparingly.
Like many Mesembs (living stones group), it has a resting period in summer when watering should be minimal.
  • Active growth: Autumn to spring — water lightly when soil is dry.
  • Dormant (hot months): Keep almost dry.

🌱 Soil

  • Needs well-draining soil — a cactus or succulent mix with sand or perlite works best.
  • Avoid water retention to prevent root rot.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Prefers cool to warm temperatures (10–25°C).
  • Protect from frost; it is not cold-hardy below 5°C.

🌼 Propagation

  • Propagated mainly by seed.
  • Can also be divided if clusters are large, though it’s slower than seed propagation.
