Haworthiopsis attenuata
Haworthiopsis attenuata is a small, attractive succulent commonly called Zebra Haworthia. It's one of the best succulents for beginners because it tolerates indoor conditions and doesn't require intense sunlight.
🦓 Appearance
· Forms a compact rosette
· Dark to medium green, pointed leaves
· Leaves have distinctive raised white bands/tubercles, creating the zebra pattern
· Usually stays around 10–15 cm (4–6 in) tall
· Produces offsets readily, so a single plant can eventually form a nice cluster
· Can produce small white flowers on a tall, thin stalk
☀️ Light
It prefers bright, indirect light with some gentle direct sunlight.
A good setup in India is:
· 🌅 1–3 hours of morning sun
· ☀️ Bright shade for the rest of the day
· 🔥 Protection from intense afternoon summer sun
It can survive indoors near a bright window, but very low light may cause the leaves to become elongated and the plant to lose its compact shape.
💧 Watering
This is where beginners often make mistakes.
Let the soil dry completely before watering again.
When it's time to water:
Water thoroughly → let excess water drain → don't water again until the soil is dry.
During hot, humid or rainy weather, the soil may take longer to dry, so don't water simply because several days have passed.
🪴 Soil
Use a very well-draining mix.
A good starting point:
60–70% pumice/perlite/grit + 30–40% succulent soil
A pot with a drainage hole is essential.
🌱 Propagation
This is one of the easiest Haworthias to propagate because it produces offsets (baby plants).
When an offset has developed some roots:
1. Gently remove it from the mother plant.
2. Allow damaged roots to dry for a day or so.
3. Plant it in a small pot with dry, gritty soil.
4. Begin light watering after it has had time to establish.
🌸 Flowers
The flowers are small and usually white with greenish/brownish markings. They're pretty but not the main attraction—the zebra-patterned foliage is what makes this plant popular.
⭐ My care recipe
For a healthy Haworthiopsis attenuata:
Bright filtered light + gentle morning sun + gritty soil + complete drying between waterings + good airflow.
It's an excellent succulent for a windowsill, balcony, or partially shaded outdoor area, particularly if you don't have a spot with strong all-day sunlight.
