Haworthia pygmaea is a small, slow-growing succulent , prized for its unique rosette, form and translucent leaf patterns. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family, the same family as aloes and gasterias.

🌿 Description

  • Appearance:
Haworthia pygmaea forms compact rosettes of thick, fleshy leaves that are triangular and pointed at the tips.
  • Leaf texture:
The leaves are dark green to grey-green and often have translucent “windows” or veins on the top, allowing sunlight to penetrate deeper for photosynthesis.
  • Size:
Typically grows 3–5 cm tall and about 6–8 cm wide.
  • Flowers:
Produces small, white tubular flowers on tall, thin stalks (inflorescences) during spring or summer. The blooms are delicate and not very showy.

🌞 Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect sunlight.
  • Too much direct sun can cause leaf burn or browning, while too little light may cause the plant to stretch (etiolate).
  • Ideal placement: East or west-facing window.

💧 Watering

  • Follow the “soak and dry” method: water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again.
  • Reduce watering in winter, when the plant is semi-dormant.
  • Overwatering can lead to root rot, a common issue with Haworthias.

🌱 Soil

  • Use a well-draining succulent mix, such as cactus soil blended with perlite or pumice.
  • Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Prefers temperatures between 18–30°C.
  • Protect from frost — it’s not cold-hardy.
  • Normal indoor humidity is fine; avoid overly humid environments.

🌼 Propagation

  • Commonly propagated by offsets (pups) that grow around the mother plant.
  • Gently remove pups once they are about half the size of the parent rosette and replant them in dry, well-draining soil.

🪴 Care Tips

  • Fertilize lightly with a succulent fertilizer during the growing season (spring–summer).
  • Avoid frequent repotting — Haworthia pygmaea grows slowly and prefers being slightly root-bound.
  • Clean dust from leaves occasionally to allow light absorption through the translucent windows.
