Echeveria ‘Red Shade’ is an ornamental rosette succulent prized for its striking color variation — typically green to pinkish-red or deep red tones, especially when exposed to bright sunlight.

  • Form: Rosette shape (like a flower), low-growing.
  • Size: Usually about 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) in diameter.
  • Leaves: Fleshy, smooth, and slightly pointed at the tips.
  • Color:
    • In lower light → more green or pale.
    • In bright sun → edges or entire leaves turn red or deep pink.

🌞 Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or full sun for a few hours daily.
  • To develop its signature red tones, it needs strong light — morning sun is ideal.
  • If kept indoors, place it near a south- or west-facing window.

💧 Watering

  • Follow the “soak and dry” method:
    • Water thoroughly when soil is completely dry.
    • Let all excess water drain out — never let it sit in water.
  • Overwatering can cause root rot, a common issue in succulents.
  • In winter, reduce watering frequency significantly.

🌱 Soil

  • Needs fast-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix.
  • You can make your own mix:
    • 2 parts potting soil
    • 1 part perlite or pumice
    • 1 part coarse sand

🌡️ Temperature

  • Thrives in warm, dry climates (65–80°F / 18–27°C).
  • Not frost-tolerant — if you live in a cold area, bring it indoors during winter.
  • Minimum temperature: about 40°F (4°C).

🌸 Flowers

  • Blooms in spring or summer, producing small bell-shaped flowers (often pink, red, or orange) on tall stems.
  • The flowers attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds.

🌿 Propagation

  • Easily propagated by:
    • Leaf cuttings: Let the leaf dry for a day or two, then place it on dry soil.
    • Offsets (pups): Remove baby rosettes growing at the base and replant them.
  • Water sparingly until roots form.

⚠️ Common Issues

  • Overwatering → mushy, translucent leaves.
  • Insufficient light → elongated (leggy) growth and loss of red coloration.
  • Pests: Watch out for mealybugs or aphids.

💡 Tips

  • To enhance red coloration, provide more sunlight and slightly cooler nights.
  • Rotate the pot every week so the rosette grows evenly.
  • Fertilize once in spring or early summer with a diluted succulent fertilizer.
