Scientific name: Echeveria pulvinata
Common names: Chenille Plant, Plush Plant, Ruby Blush, or Ruby Slippers
Family: Crassulaceae (the stonecrop family)

🌿 Appearance

  • Leaves: The leaves are oval to spoon-shaped, covered in fine white hairs (trichomes), which give them a velvety or fuzzy texture — that’s where it gets the name “chenille” or “plush.”
  • Color: Typically green-gray, but the tips can blush red or orange in strong sunlight or cooler weather.
  • Growth form: Forms small rosettes (up to about 8–10 cm across), often branching into a shrub-like cluster over time.

🌸 Flowers

  • Blooming season: Usually late winter to spring.
  • Appearance: Flowers grow on slender stems and are bright orange-red with yellow interiors — very showy and attractive to hummingbirds and pollinators.

🌞 Care Requirements

Aspect

Ideal Conditions

Light

Bright, indirect sunlight or morning sun; can tolerate full sun if acclimated. Too little light = stretched (etiolated) growth.

Water

Follow the “soak and dry” method — water thoroughly, then let soil dry out completely before watering again. Overwatering can cause root rot.

Soil

Well-draining succulent/cactus mix; you can add perlite or pumice for extra drainage.

Temperature

Prefers warm temps (65–80°F / 18–27°C); not frost-hardy, so bring indoors if below 45°F (7°C).

Humidity

Low to moderate; avoid misting due to the hairy leaves.

Fertilizer

Optional — a diluted succulent fertilizer once a month in spring/summer. Avoid feeding in winter.

🌱 Propagation

Very easy!
You can propagate Echeveria pulvinata by:

  • Leaf cuttings: Let them callus for a few days, then place on well-draining soil.
  • Stem cuttings: Especially from leggy or older plants.
  • Offsets (pups): Simply separate and replant.

⚠️ Common Problems

  • Overwatering: Most common issue → root rot.
  • Too little light: Stretched stems and pale color.
  • Pests: Watch for mealybugs and aphids, especially on fuzzy leaves.

💡 Fun Fact

The hairs on the leaves aren’t just for looks — they help the plant reduce water loss and reflect harsh sunlight, making it perfectly adapted to its arid Mexican habitat.
