Echeveria ‘Green Velvet’

Overview:
Echeveria ‘Green Velvet’, also known as Echeveria pulvinata, is a charming and fuzzy succulent native to Mexico. It’s called “Green Velvet” because of its soft, velvety leaves covered with fine silvery hairs. These tiny hairs protect the plant from intense sunlight and help it retain moisture — giving it a beautiful, fuzzy texture and a gentle sheen.

🌱 Appearance

  • Leaves: Thick, fleshy, and covered in fine, soft hairs; bright green in color.
  • Shape: Forms compact rosettes that grow up to 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) across.
  • Stems: Woody at the base with branching, which can create small shrub-like clumps.
  • Flowers: In late winter or spring, it produces bright orange-red, bell-shaped flowers on tall stalks — very attractive to hummingbirds and bees.

🌞 Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright sunlight or partial sun.
  • Ideal for windowsills or balconies where it receives 4–6 hours of sunlight daily.
  • Too little light can make the leaves lose their compact shape and become leggy.

💧 Watering

  • Follow the “soak and dry” rule — water thoroughly when the soil is dry.
  • Avoid getting water on the leaves; the fine hairs can trap moisture and cause rot.
  • Reduce watering in winter when growth slows down.

🪴 Soil

  • Needs well-draining soil — a cactus/succulent mix works perfectly.
  • You can add perlite or coarse sand to improve drainage.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Thrives in 18–27°C (65–80°F).
  • Protect from frost; bring indoors when temperatures drop below 10°C (50°F).

🌸 Propagation

  • Easily propagated from leaf cuttings or stem cuttings.
  • Allow cuttings to callous for 1–2 days before planting in dry soil.

⚠️ Common Problems

  • Overwatering → root rot.
  • Poor light → stretched growth (etiolation).
