Echeveria elegans, also known as the Mexican Snowball or White Mexican Rose, is a popular species of succulent in the Crassulaceae family. is loved for its compact rosette shape, attractive silvery-blue leaves, and ease of care.

🌿 Appearance

  • Rosette shape: Forms tight, symmetrical rosettes up to 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) wide.
  • Leaves: Fleshy, spoon-shaped, pale green to bluish-silver with a powdery coating (called farina) that protects it from sunburn and water loss.
  • Flowers: In late winter or spring, it produces slender, arching stems with pinkish to coral bell-shaped flowers that have yellow tips.

🌞 Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright sunlight or partial sun.
  • Indoors: Place near a south- or west-facing window.
  • Outdoors: It thrives in full sun, but in very hot climates, a bit of afternoon shade prevents leaf scorch.

💧 Watering

  • Follow the “soak and dry” method:
    • Water deeply, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again.
    • Avoid letting water sit on the rosette to prevent rot.
  • Reduce watering in winter, when the plant goes semi-dormant.

🪴 Soil

  • Needs well-draining soil, ideally a cactus/succulent mix.
  • You can improve drainage by mixing in perlite, pumice, or coarse sand.

🌡️ Temperature & Hardiness

  • Prefers 18–24°C (65–75°F).
  • Can tolerate mild frost (down to around -3°C or 26°F) if kept dry, but best grown in frost-free environments.
  • USDA zones 9–11.

🌱 Propagation

  • Very easy to propagate via:
    • Offsets (pups): Small rosettes that grow around the mother plant — simply separate and replant.
    • Leaf cuttings: Allow the leaf to callus for a few days, then place on well-draining soil.

⚠️ Common Issues

  • Overwatering → root rot.
  • Stretching (etiolation) if not enough sunlight.
  • Pests: Occasionally mealybugs or aphids, especially around new growth.
