Scientific name: Dyckia brevifolia
Family: Bromeliaceae (the bromeliad family)
Common names: Sawblade, Pineapple Dyckia

Although Dyckia species look like succulents, they are actually bromeliads, related to pineapples — not to aloes or agaves. Still, they behave much like succulents because they thrive in dry, sunny conditions and have thick, water-storing leaves.

🌵 Appearance

  • Leaves:
    • Stiff, narrow, and sharply toothed (like little saw blades).
    • Usually green to silvery-gray, sometimes with a bronze or reddish tint under strong sun.
    • Form a tight rosette.
  • Size:
    • Individual rosettes are about 10–20 cm (4–8 in) across.
    • Clumps can expand into dense mats over time.
  • Flowers:
    • Bright yellow or orange, appearing on short stalks in spring or early summer.
    • Attract pollinators like bees.

☀️ Growing Conditions

Requirement

Ideal Conditions

Light

Full sun to bright light (brings out best colors)

Temperature

Warm; tolerates light frost (down to about -2°C / 28°F) if kept dry

Soil

Well-draining mix — cactus or succulent soil works great

Water

Moderate; water when soil is completely dry; more in summer, very little in winter

Humidity

Prefers dry air but adapts easily

Fertilizer

Light feeding in spring/summer (half-strength cactus fertilizer)

🪴 Care Tips

  • Don’t overwater. Dyckias are drought-tolerant but rot-prone if kept wet.
  • Good drainage is critical. Use a pot with holes.
  • Offsets (pups) appear at the base — you can divide and repot them easily.
  • Tolerates neglect. Very hardy and forgiving once established.
  • Sun exposure brings out reddish or bronzy tones in the leaves.

🌼 Propagation

  • By division (pups): Remove offsets and replant them once they’re a few inches wide.
  • By seed: Possible but slow — takes several years to mature.
