Kalanchoe beharensis, commonly known as “Velvet Elephant Ear,” “Felt Bush,” or “Napoleon’s Hat,” is a striking and unusual succulent native to Madagascar. It’s famous for its large, velvety leaves and sculptural form, making it a favorite among succulent collectors and indoor plant lovers. 🌿

🌱 Plant Description

  • Scientific name: Kalanchoe beharensis
  • Family: Crassulaceae
  • Type: Perennial succulent shrub
  • Origin: Madagascar

This plant has triangular to heart-shaped leaves that are thick, wavy-edged, and covered with brownish felt-like hairs, giving them a velvety texture. The leaves are gray-green on top and rusty-brown underneath, giving the plant a beautiful two-tone look.

Mature plants can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) tall in their natural habitat, though they usually stay smaller indoors.

🌞 Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright light to full sun.
  • Indoors, place near a south or west-facing window.
  • Too little light causes leggy growth and pale leaves.

💧 Watering

  • Water sparingly—allow the soil to dry completely between watering.
  • Overwatering can cause root rot.
  • In winter, reduce watering even more as the plant goes semi-dormant.

🪴 Soil

  • Use well-draining succulent or cactus mix.
  • Adding perlite or sand improves drainage.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Thrives in warm, dry conditions (18–29°C / 65–85°F).
  • Not frost-tolerant—keep above 10°C (50°F).
  • Avoid high humidity; it prefers a dry environment.

🌼 Flowers

  • Produces small, greenish-yellow flowers on tall stalks, usually in late winter or spring.
  • The flowers are less showy—the main attraction is the unique foliage.

🌿 Propagation

  • Easily propagated from leaf or stem cuttings.
  • Let cuttings callous over for a few days, then plant in dry soil.

⚠️ Care Tips

  • Avoid touching leaves too much — the soft fuzz can rub off.
  • Protect from cold drafts and excess water.
  • Rotate occasionally to maintain even growth.
