Scientific name: Crassula muscosa
Common names: Watch Chain, Princess Pine, Lizard’s Tail, Zipper Plant
Family: Crassulaceae

🌿 Appearance

  • Crassula muscosa has tiny, tightly packed, overlapping leaves that grow around thin stems — resembling the links of a watch chain or zipper (hence the nickname).
  • The leaves are bright green to yellow-green, sometimes turning reddish or brownish in strong sunlight or when stressed.
  • Mature plants can form dense, bushy mats or trailing stems up to about 30 cm (12 inches) long.

🌸 Flowers

  • The flowers are tiny, star-shaped, and yellow-green or brownish.
  • They often appear in clusters at the tips of stems during spring or early summer.
  • While not very showy, they have a mild, musty scent that can attract pollinators.

☀️ Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or partial sun.
  • Can tolerate full sun if gradually acclimated, which brings out deeper coloration.
  • Indoors: place near a south- or west-facing window.

💧 Watering

  • Like most succulents, it thrives on infrequent watering.
  • Use the “soak and dry” method: water thoroughly, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again.
  • Overwatering can cause root rot — this is the most common issue.

🪴 Soil & Potting

  • Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
  • You can improve drainage by adding perlite, pumice, or coarse sand.
  • Ensure the pot has drainage holes.

🌡️ Temperature & Hardiness

  • Ideal temperature: 15–26°C (60–80°F).
  • Can tolerate brief drops to around 5°C (40°F) but should be protected from frost.
  • Suitable for USDA zones 9–11.

🌱 Propagation

  • Very easy to propagate!
  • Simply take a stem cutting, allow it to callus for a day or two, and then plant it in dry soil.
  • Roots typically form within a few weeks.
