Crassula ‘Humbert

🌸 Overview:
Crassula ‘Humbertii’ is a small, slow-growing succulent from the Crassulaceae family. It is native to Madagascar and is prized for its unique, angular, stacked leaves and compact, trailing habit. This plant is sometimes confused with Crassula perforata (String of Buttons), but Humbertii has thicker, triangular leaves that grow in opposite pairs along a reddish stem.

🌿 Appearance

  • Leaves: Small, fleshy, and triangular; arranged tightly in opposite pairs around the stem.
  • Color: Green to gray-green with hints of red or purple on the edges, especially in bright sunlight.
  • Growth: Forms a low, trailing or spreading mat, making it perfect for rock gardens, hanging pots, or as ground cover.
  • Flowers: Tiny, star-shaped white or pinkish flowers that appear in clusters during spring or early summer.

🌞 Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or 4–6 hours of morning sun.
  • Too little light causes stretching (etiolation), while too much harsh sun can scorch the leaves.
  • Ideal placement: near a sunny window or in a lightly shaded outdoor spot.

💧 Watering

  • Water sparingly — allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.
  • Overwatering can cause root rot, which Crassulas are very sensitive to.
  • Use the “soak and dry” method: water thoroughly, then wait until the soil is dry before watering again.

🌱 Soil

  • Needs well-draining succulent or cactus soil.
  • You can mix:
    • 2 parts cactus mix
    • 1 part perlite or coarse sand
    • Optional: small gravel for extra drainage.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Thrives in 18–27°C (65–80°F).
  • Not frost-tolerant — protect from cold below 10°C (50°F).
  • Prefers dry air; no need for misting.

🌼 Fertilizer

  • Feed lightly during spring and summer with a diluted succulent fertilizer once every 4–6 weeks.
  • Do not fertilize in winter when the plant is dormant.

🌿 Propagation

  • Very easy to propagate by stem or leaf cuttings:
    1. Cut a healthy stem.
    2. Let it callous for 2–3 days.
    3. Plant in dry, well-draining soil and water sparingly until roots form.

⚠️ Common Issues

  • Overwatering: Root rot and mushy leaves.
  • Underwatering: Wrinkled or shriveled leaves.
