The term “Wandering Jew” refers to several species in the Tradescantia genus — popular houseplants known for their trailing vines and colorful leaves. Despite the outdated common name (which some prefer to avoid due to negative historical connotations), these plants are beloved for their beauty and ease of care.

You might also hear them called:

  • Inch plants
  • Spiderwort
  • Or simply Tradescantia

🌿 Common Varieties

Some of the most popular types include:

  1. Tradescantia zebrina — Purple and silver-striped leaves with a shiny underside.
  2. Tradescantia fluminensis — Green and white variegated leaves; smaller and more delicate.
  3. Tradescantia pallida (Purple Heart) — Deep purple foliage and pinkish flowers; often used outdoors in warm climates.
  4. Tradescantia spathacea (Moses-in-the-Cradle) — Boat-shaped leaves that are green on top and purple underneath.

🌞 Light

  • Bright, indirect light is best.
  • Too little light → dull colors and leggy growth.
  • Too much direct sun → leaf burn, especially on lighter varieties.

💧 Water

Although often called “succulents,” Tradescantia are not true succulents — but they do have slightly fleshy stems that store moisture.

  • Water when the top 1 inch (2–3 cm) of soil feels dry.
  • Don’t let them sit in soggy soil; they dislike “wet feet.”
  • Overwatering = root rot and mushy stems.

🌱 Soil

Use well-draining potting mix, such as:

  • Regular houseplant mix + perlite or sand, or
  • Cactus/succulent mix with some peat for moisture retention.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Thrive at 18–27°C (65–80°F).
  • Avoid cold drafts (below 10°C / 50°F).
  • They enjoy moderate humidity — mist occasionally if your home is dry.

✂️ Growth & Pruning

  • Tradescantias grow fast and trail beautifully — perfect for hanging pots!
  • Pinch or trim the ends often to encourage bushy growth.
  • You can easily propagate cuttings in water or soil — they root quickly!
