A Moon is the bright, colorful cactus you often see in red, yellow, orange, or pink.
That’s why it’s grafted onto another cactus that can make food — usually a Hylocereus (a green cactus).

🌱 What Is Grafting?

Grafting is a gardening technique where you join two different plants so that they grow together as one.

  • The top part (scion) is the Moon Cactus — the colorful one.
  • The bottom part (rootstock) is the green cactus that provides nutrients and support.

When done correctly, the two parts fuse together, allowing the Moon Cactus to live and grow.

🔧 How to Graft a Moon Cactus (Step-by-Step)

  1. Choose your cacti:
    • Scion: A colorful Gymnocalycium mihanovichii (red, yellow, etc.)
    • Rootstock: A healthy green cactus, usually Hylocereus or Myrtillocactus geometrizans.
  2. Cut the tops:
    • Use a clean, sharp knife to cut the top off the rootstock cactus.
    • Cut the base of the Moon Cactus flat so it can sit on top.
  3. Align the vascular rings:
    • Each cactus has a small ring (vascular bundle) in the center where nutrients flow.
    • Align at least part of these rings between the two cacti — they must touch for the graft to succeed.
  4. Secure the graft:
    • Gently press the Moon Cactus on top of the rootstock.
    • Use rubber bands or string to hold them together firmly (but not too tight).
  5. Wait and care:
    • Place the grafted cactus in a warm, shaded area (not direct sunlight).
    • After about 2–3 weeks, the graft should take — you can remove any bands.

💧 Care Tips After Grafting

  • Light: Bright, indirect sunlight (avoid harsh midday sun).
  • Water: Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
  • Temperature: Keep warm — avoid frost or cold drafts.
  • Re-grafting: The rootstock can outgrow or age, so you may need to re-graft every few years.
