Aloe aristata – commonly known as Lace Aloe or Torch Plant – is a beautiful, compact succulent known for its elegant rosette of fleshy, dark green leaves decorated with tiny white spots and soft, white, lace-like edges. 🌿

🌱 General Description

  • Scientific Name: Aloe aristata
  • Common Names: Lace Aloe, Torch Plant
  • Family: Asphodelaceae

Aloe aristata forms a small, neat rosette (about 15–20 cm wide). Its leaves are dark green with white speckles and soft cilia (hairs) along the edges. The leaf tips often have tiny white filaments that give it a “lace” appearance—hence the name Lace Aloe.

During flowering season (usually late spring to early summer), it produces tall flower stalks (up to 30–40 cm) with tubular orange-red flowers, which attract hummingbirds and bees.

🌞 Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or partial sun.
  • Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon sun (which can scorch the leaves).
  • Indoors, place near a south- or east-facing window.

💧 Watering

  • Water sparingly. Let the soil dry completely between waterings.
  • In summer, water every 2–3 weeks; in winter, once a month or less.
  • Avoid water sitting in the rosette—it can cause rot.

🌿 Soil

  • Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
  • Ideal mix: 2 parts potting soil + 1 part perlite/pumice + 1 part coarse sand.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Prefers moderate temperatures: 15–27°C (60–80°F).
  • Not frost-tolerant — protect from temperatures below 5°C (41°F).
  • Low humidity is best.

🌸 Propagation

  • Easily propagated by offsets (pups) that grow at the base of the plant.
  • Remove pups when they’re a few cm tall, let them callous for a day or two, then plant in dry succulent soil.

⚠️ Common Problems

  • Overwatering: Causes root rot — the most common issue.
  • Insufficient light: Leads to stretched or pale leaves.
  • Cold damage: Leaves may shrivel or get dark spots if exposed to frost.
